Abstract

Self-confidence plays an important role in students’ ability to communicate effectively in English as a foreign language. However, many students still experience difficulties and lack confidence when speaking English in classroom interactions. This study aims to explore students’ perceptions of the factors that contribute to their lack of self-confidence in speaking English as a foreign language. This research employed a qualitative research design using semi-structured interviews as the primary data collection technique. The study was conducted at Universitas Muslim Maros with a population of 63 students from the English Education Department, involving eight participants selected as research informants. The collected data were analyzed using descriptive qualitative analysis based on the stages of data condensation, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings reveal several factors influencing students’ lack of self-confidence in speaking English. These include limited vocabulary, difficulties in pronunciation, lack of speaking practice, fear of making mistakes, limited speaking experience, overthinking, environmental influences, insufficient grammar mastery, nervousness, anxiety, and stage fright. These factors contribute to students’ hesitation and reluctance to actively participate in speaking activities. The study concludes that both linguistic and psychological factors play significant roles in shaping students’ self-confidence in speaking English. Therefore, creating supportive learning environments and providing more opportunities for speaking practice are essential to help students develop greater confidence in using English as a foreign language.
